EDITORS’ NOTES

Recorded live in Munich in January 2018, Beethoven’s seldom-heard Mass in C Major receives a superbly judged and authoritative performance from Jansons and his magnificent Bavarian forces. Smaller in scale than the great Missa solemnis, this Mass still makes quite an impact when done with such conviction. A superb quartet of soloists and some trenchant choral singing add luster to the already well-known qualities of the great Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, an ensemble at the top of its game. The Leonore Overture No. 3, a powerful statement about man’s refusal to bow to evil, makes a thrilling coupling.
