A Unique and Historic Collection (unfortunately not completely available online)

Fans of the Philadelphia music scene from the late 1950's to mid 1960's no longer have to settle for inferior re-recordings of their favorite hits from Chubby Checker, Bobby Rydell, The Tymes, The Orlons, The Dovells, Dee Dee Sharp, and others. But this 115-track box set is so much more: Cameo-Parkway was one of the most storied labels of the era, and this compilation reaches far and wide to showcase all of its artists and the trends they started or followed. I'll never forget the special broadcast on XM featuring legendary DJ Jerry Blavat (who himself has one track here) that aired following this release in 2005. The label got off the ground in 1957 with Charlie Gracie's "Butterfly", and became popular with the dance crazes of the era, but also came to feature serious Philly soul, novelty hits, bubble gum, the British Invasion, and the beginnings of midwestern Garage Rock. It is notable how many performers got their start here and went on to greater popularity elsewhere: Johnny Maestro, the Tams, Eddie Holman, the Delfonics, Patti Labelle, the Kinks, the Five Stairsteps, and Bob Seger. A dozen tracks from Disc 3 and Disc 4, featuring the latter three and a couple of others, along with the Sounds Orchestral ("Cast Your Fate to the Wind") are only available on the CD set due to rights issues (although Seger's "Sock It To Me Santa" can be downloaded here from the Cameo-Parkway Christmas album).
