iTunes Review

At the foundation of this folky Montreal quartet are the brothers Barr: Brad and Andrew. The former handles guitar duties, bass, and keyboards while the latter holds down rhythms and percussion. Sarah Page contributes harp and hammer dulcimer parts, and their longtime friend Andres Vial dials in pump organ and vibraphone tones. “Beggar in the Morning” opens strong on organic drones, unfolding into a lilting folk-rock dirge. “Ooh, Belle” follows with a hushed autumnal hymn, but “Give the Devil Back His Heart” is a standout gem where handclap rhythms and dexterous electric guitar leads help put the “rock” back in “folk-rock.” Similarly, their driving cover of Blind Willie Johnson’s “Lord, I Just Can't Keep from Crying” pumps open-tuned blues chords through distorted tube amps over a steady drumbeat; the result is something fans of both Black Lips and The Black Keys are sure to dig. “Deacon’s Son” returns The Barr Brothers to their beautifully melancholic musings before “Let There Be Horses” closes on softly strummed acoustic guitar and romantic male/female harmonies.

This is one of my favorite albums. Other than Born to Run, this is the most complete album I've ever heard. My favorites are Beggar in the Morning, Lord, I Just Can't Keep from Crying and Old Mythologies. Every song is a little different but great in its own way.

The Barr Brothers is My Jam!

This is a great album.

Oh, to write an instant classic...

Beggar in the Morning is an instant classic. What every songwriter secretly hopes for. Keep up the fine work boys & grrl... .

Originally based out of Boston, Massachusetts, the Barrs spent the bulk of the 1990s touring with the Slip before calling it quits in 2004. Upon relocating to Montreal, the duo hooked up with classically trained harpist Sarah Page and...
