I think I

As I listen to Cortney Tidwell, and especially this album, I have wondered how such a wonderfully creative and authentic artist can be produced in Nashville. Admittedly, this reflects my cyniscm about the commercial center of Country and Christian music. But, I think I've figured it out.

The musicians, producers, and engineers in Nashville who are sick of dealing with the suits and the numbers and the celebrities must jump at the chance to work with Cortney. It's their chance to get their true artist going, to express some real creativity, and to do something actually meaningful musically. Its a chance to set the vocoder and pitch correction tricks aside and double track a singer with a pure voice who doesn't need gratuitous R&B vocal trills to make her point. The music is fabulously executed by what I hear to be very talented folks.

This album is an entrancing mixture of tunes that range from the simple and lean "Being Crosby" to the dreamy electronics and impressionist vocals of "Son & Moon" and "Bad News" to the stark pounding of "17 Horses". My favorite might be "Palace". When my wife heard "Solid State" she asked, "who is this? she can sing!"

I really like this album. So different than the current "products" coming out of Nashville. A wide variety of tunes and super interesting vocal treatments in all.

Why is this chick not bigger?!

She's really good, and in the age of female power vocals, Cortney Tidwell could stand up next to any of 'em.

Biography

Possessing a beautiful voice and an ethereal melodic sense that suggests a freak folk variation on Mazzy Star or This Mortal Coil, singer and songwriter Cortney Tidwell was born into a family of musicians, but in her early life this heritage seemed as much a curse as a blessing. Tidwell was born in Nashville, TN, where her grandfather had been a successful recording artist and a guest on the Grand Ol' Opry, her father was a veteran A&R man, her mother had landed several singles on the country charts...
