iTunes Review

The Rising Tied is the debut effort from Fort Minor, the side project from Linkin Park leader Mike Shinoda. Shinoda intended the album as an outlet for his interest in hip-hop, which couldn’t always be adequately expressed within Linkin Park. Working with Jay-Z on 2004’s Collision Course album gave Shinoda the perfect in to pursue Fort Minor, which Jay-Z executive-produced. While Sean Carter himself doesn’t make an appearance, many heavy hitters do, including Common, John Legend and Black Thought. “Petrified,” “Kenji” and “Slip Out the Back” touch on the volcanic emotion of Linkin Park, but the best songs on The Rising Tied are the collaborations with underground rap crew Styles of Beyond, personal friends of Shinoda’s from way back. “Feel Like Home,” “Back Home” and “Believe Me” hold hip-hop bounce, hard-rock intensity, and storytelling virtuosity in easy balance. However, the song that best defines Shinoda’s aesthetic is “Right Now” where over a tensely layered beat Shinoda sketches a panoramic view of struggle and worry that extends from the inner-city projects to the suburbs and onto the battlefields of Iraq.

Sheer brilliance

This album is pure genius, im not a huge fan of rap nowadays and where rap is heading but this is a blast of fresh air. Mike has really produced something incredible because every single song is a different story. Not only are the songs free of the same old stereotype gangster rap that has infiltrated radio airwaves today, but the lyrics actually paint mental pictures. From start to finish this album is truly a masterpiece. All of the tracks are great and worth putting up the money for the whole CD. A must have album for any fan of rap or creative genius

Awesome job Mike

This is the album that introduced me to rap music. Awesome job.

This album is simply amazing. It is one of few CDs that I can just listen to all of the tracks over and over again. Along with M. Shinoda on many of the tracks is the very talented Styles of Beyond which creates a great sounding trio. There's a little something different in each track which you can't say to a lot of other artists. The sound varies from song to song and has their own spark. I highly recommend the album as it has the most memerable tunes I've encountered.

In November 2005, Linkin Park co-founder Mike Shinoda debuted as a solo artist with Rising Tied, an ambitious collection credited to his alter ego, Fort Minor, that blended hip-hop with electronics and rock elements. The set was exec-produced by Jay-Z, who had previously collaborated with Shinoda and Linkin Park on 2004's Collision Course. Tied also featured plenty of guests like Common and John Legend, as well as newer artists from Shinoda's Machine Shop imprint. The album was a labor of love for...
