Just Another Pretty Face
I think the booklet to this disc says it all - lots of pictures of the soprano in a number of stunning outfits. There are of course perfunctory comments on the operas and the arias and some faux-significant quotes from Machaidze. But the truth is that everything on this disc has been done better elsewhere. The voice itself has a rather neutral coloration and a somewhat heavy timbre, which makes the voice sound much too mature for the younger roles here (Manon, Juliette, etc.) Indeed, instead of sounding desperate or agitated, she often sounds angry or aggressive. That would be forgivable if the technique would allow us to forget this, but this too is very much a mixed bag. The phrasing here is frequently breathy, the coloratura often clumsy and approximate, trills really not even attempted. The top notes are there, but are best when she can simply throw back her head and make a big sound - any attempt to modulate the tone is met with tentative intonation and awkward tone placement. I thought the Turco and Fille arias showed off her talents best, but even these are easily bettered by any number of other artists past and present.
