With Fall of Romance, Canadian indie rockers Imaginary Cities dream of a lush future macerated in the past. The songwriting team of Rusty Matyas (formerly of The Waking Eyes) and Marti Sarbit (a singer/songwriter grounded in Motown) offer a distinctive mix of speakeasy pianos, Dust Bowl banjos, and Salvation Army trumpets into their steampunk homage to Phil Spector. In contemplative moments like "Still Waiting/So Cold (The Hidden Song)," the reverb-heavy vocals sink into lament; "Sooner or Later" has a slippery lilt reminiscent of Cocteau Twins. But on densely layered tracks like "Bells of Cologne," Sarbit's vibrato rises right to the top.
