Dadi is the moniker of the Brazilian multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter Eduardo Magalhães de Carvalho. In a career that dates back to the 1970s, he’s played bass with Rita Lee (of Os Mutantes), cut a record with Mick Jagger, and worked with Caetano Veloso, Marisa Monte, and Carlinhos Brown. 2010’s excellent Bem Aqui presents a dozen songs that seamlessly integrate bossa nova, Tropicalia, and 70s rock. A dazzling number of hooks mark this album; it’s the sort of music you sing along with the first you hear it. The opener, “Refem,” immediately pulls you in with its rocking beat, funky guitar, and Dadi’s rapid-fire vocals. On “Devo Lhe Dizer,” American soft-rock is transformed into lovely Brazilian pop, complete with mandolin strums and sliding guitar tones. (Guest Adriana Calcanhotto’s vocals are gorgeous.) The quiet — and very Brazilian — title cut has a variety of pleasing touches: just-so piano and acoustic guitar, Moreno Veloso’s cello, and Leilinha’s backup vocals. Bem Aqui is jammed with appealing vocal performances, but it closes with “Soraya,” a chugging, low-key rock instrumental.
