I remember hearing "Lies" for the first time....

way back in 1966. I thought for sure is was a new Beatles release and I was shocked when the DJ came on and said it was by the Knickerbockers. (Who?). The Ventures did an outstanding instrumental version of "Lies".


This is good.


It's definitely The Rutles meet The Wonders (from "That Thing That You Do!"). The bridge of the "Lies" single sounds like it definitely inspired the harmony from the title song from "That Thing That You Do". No problems with it. It's one of the catchiest derivative arrangements ever produced and I'm glad I discovered it. The rest of the songs are nondescript at best.

In early 1966, the Knickerbockers hit the Top 20 with "Lies," the best and most accurate early Beatle imitation ever recorded; the lead vocals were a dead ringer for John Lennon and the whole production could have fit in snugly on the second side of A Hard Day's Night. Actually a frat rock band from New Jersey who didn't write much of their own material, they never made anything else as successful.
