The Greatest Arranger
Robert Farnon had it all: he was a brilliant orchestrator and gifted composer. In my view, his arrangements of standard pop tunes, of which this album is an example without peer, are in a class by themselves. He created incredibly inventive orchestrations with such skill, that to the casual listener, it all just swings on by. But if you listen deeply, you hear instrumental colors, figurations, textures that no one else, with the possible exception of Conrad Salinger came close to creating. Two of the arrangements in this CD are, in my view, the best arrangements produced by anyone in any style: Varsity Drag, and You're The Cream in my Coffee. And I am weighing those two against creations by arrangers such as Nelson Riddle, Don Costa, Billy May, Salinger, Gil Evans, Billy Strayhorn. The Best Things in Life Are Free and Black Bottom are also masterpieces. Farnon deserves to be put at the head of the class for his always swinging, inventive, surprising charts. His use of dissonance was always perfect for the moment.
His creative impulse wasn't limited to the big-band things. His ballads, with their characteristic 'romantic' strings likewise provide constant surprises.
Pop music from the great days of the great songwriters doesn't ever get treatments better than these!
