10 Songs, 51 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

On their fourth LP, L.A.’s indie-rock mood-masters play with tension like never before. There’s a driving immediacy to the electro-rocker “Cradle (Better Nature)” that, despite its punch, is never pushed full-throttle. Ditto “Connection,” whose crunchy, filtered guitars punctuate and propel singer Brian Aubert’s subdued social commentary. On "Pins & Needles," his melodic vocals float over a swinging groove that's so in-the-pocket, it dares you not to nod your head. Every track builds till it's on the verge of exploding, but the band's calculated sense of restraint ensures they never lose their cool.

Long time fan, but not sold on this album.

The old sound of the royal we have been replaced with techno beeps and bops that make me wonder if my long time love for this band will continue on. Call me old school, but this album wasn't what I was wishing for.

So dissapointed.

I wanted to LOVE this because I love a ton of SSPU... but this album felt half-baked in a lot of places. Too much filler quasi-synth, and a lack of conviction and substance. "Nightlight" and "Latchkey Kids" were the only two tracks I'll probably repeatedly return to. The bulk of this album just sounds like a band trying to "mature" but doing it awkwardly so. Musical arrangements were poor.

It's going to be pure bliss for your ears. I would say I'm expecting it to be great, but let's be fair we already know it's going to be fantastic.
