Album Review

Muzzle's debut album, Betty Pickup, was a blast of indie guitar rock similar in style to Sugar or punk band Shades Apart. The highlight of this set of songs was without a doubt the brilliant, soaring "What a Bore," a which showed that Muzzle can write some great melodies and vocal harmonies. Of the rest of the album, "Bleed On" and "Glug" came closest to matching this high standard. Unfortunately for Muzzle, melodies alone don't make a great album. On Betty Pickup, the band fell into the trap of allowing too little light and shade on the album, preferring instead a straight-ahead guitar assault. Still, though, Betty Pickup was a promising debut from a talented young band.

Say Hello To My Little Friend

I've been listening this disc for quite a few of those rare finds - I don't even remember how I stumbled into it. I gotta tell you, I have NEVER gotten tired of it. Blistering guitars and bashing drums, nice harmonies and great songs. The comparison to Sugar by the official reviewer is apt when talking about the wall of guitar noise, but Betty Pickup sounds edgier and less "formula driven" than that (this coming from a big Sugar fan). So forget that nonsense about it all being just an all out guitar assault. Oh, it IS that, but I find it to have a great variety, with lots of change-ups in mode and tempo and some really catchy and interesting song structures (while your ears turn pleasingly numb).
Bottom Line: Like Indie Guitar Rock? Give this a try.

Great album

I bought this back when they used to open for another great Seattle band, Super Deluxe. After all these years still flawless power pop. Do yourself a favor a buy it.

Endless shuffling of the rhythm section plagued the group throughout its early years, but they garnered a devoted live following and in time released their...
