iTunes Review

One of the great unheralded Southern rock groups, Kentucky’s Black Stone Cherry are masters of classic-rock guitar riffs mixed to a post-grunge attitude. They are one of the finest hard-rock bands of the 21st century and their third album, Between the Devil & the Deep Blue Sea, further establishes their reputation. “White Trash Millionaire” comes out of the gate kicking with an uncompromising aggression. “In My Blood,” “Won’t Let Go” and “Stay” showcase singer Chris Robertson’s emotional range. The ‘cry’ in his voice is as powerful as any country singer. “Such a Shame” throws a Led Zeppelin Southern boogie riff into the mix. “Blame It On the Boom Boom,” “Let Me See You Shake” and a pile-driving version of the Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See” put forth a modern-rock power rich with slink and sass. “Like I Roll” is a delicious pop tune with classic-rock references. “All I’m Dreamin’ Of” throws in a mandolin for a country-bluegrass touch. The Special Edition includes three bonus tracks every bit as powerful as the official cuts. “Fade Away” is a striking acoustic-electric tune that works the dynamic range.

Going Mainstream

For the most part this is a really good album but it is lacking the original quality Black Stone Cherry delivered on their last two efforts. Songs like White Trash Millionaire and Blame it on the Boom Boom should finally get them on the radio and open BSC to a brand new audience. Lyrically speaking, it might be the worst album of the three. However, to make it into the mainstream world most bands have to dumb down their lyrics and sing lovesick ballads, and talk about very broad topics that appeal to everyone. It is nice to see Chris's guitar work finally be showcased on an album and the production value of this record is by far the best Black Stone Cherry has released. Still one of my favorite bands, and I don't miss any live show within a few hours of my home. Overall, I give this album a three out five because of the lyrics and the direction the music is taking to appeal to a mainstream audience. The album is worth buying but for fans of the first record it is a little bit of a let down.

Simply Amazing.

Between the Devil & the Deep Blue Sea shows the versatility of Chris Robertson on vocals, along with awesome guitar and drum solos. Black Stone Cherry continue to put out great albums by staying true to their roots instead of 'going mainstream.' This is my favorite band, and this is now my favorite album!
