Album Review

Released just a year after the band made their full-length debut with 2009's Sleepwalking, Memphis May Fire push their sound to its aggressive limits on their second EP, Between the Lies. While the Dallas-based band hasn't completely abandoned its melodic, post-hardcore tendencies, the EP feels more relentless in its execution. Songs like "Deuces Las Cruces" is a punishing metalcore assault that feels like an exercise in pure catharsis, especially given its placement on the EP after the floating, synth-drenched expanses of "Vaulted Ceilings," a song that feels like an oasis from the sonic savagery Memphis May Fire have started to experiment with. Though these kind of releases can often feel like a perfunctory reminder that a band still exists, Between the Lies feels like an important step in the band's evolution, bridging the gap between their debut and sophomore full-length, 2011's The Hollow.

this is insane. originally, i was bummed that they only released an e.p. but this is so good that i don't even are there are five songs. these five songs are twice as good as anything else, so that makes it better than a ten track cd. does that even make sense?

and cut...

yup thats a wrap... any thing that made them different from any other band has been thrown out the window..
way to go guys, it was only a matter of time, instead of trying to perfect your tricks you just closed up shop and went the easy way

my ticket home, the world alive, woe is me, blah blah blah....

i wash my hands of this madness

Thank you

This EP is awesome. Not quite as much of that "southern swagger" as their earlier stuff, but they make up for it with pummeling, fast paced rock'n roll. Highlights for me are "Be Careful What You Wish For" and "Gingervitus", although, all of the songs are actually really well done. "Vaulted Ceilings" is so different for them, but still really cool. Get this EP to tie you over until they release their next full length album, for sure. Great work guys.

Genre: Rock

Memphis May Fire hail from Dallas, Texas, having formed in December 2006 when Chase Ryan (vocals), Kellen McGregor (guitar and vocals), Ryan Bentley (guitar), Austin Radford (bass), and Jeremy Grisham (drums) came together to write songs for an EP. Signed to Trustkill early the following year on the strength of said eponymous EP (later reissued by the label), the group immediately began to work on new material for a long-player while honing their very intricate blend of hardcore, metal, and emo on-stage....
