iTunes Review

Comparisons to Echo & The Bunnymen and The Teardrop Explodes are inevitable, due to White Lies' cavernous reverb, heavily emphasized keyboards, and a somber longing that takes romantic troubles to the existential edge. Certainly, those who grew up immersing themselves in the early-'80s goth scene will find a sense of comfort in these familiar scenes. Yet anyone could enjoy the sublime melodies that hold these songs together. The mesmerizing first single, "There Goes Our Love Again," is too beautiful to lose, and "First Time Caller," which follows after an appropriate instrumental breather ("Space I"), furthers the reasons for taking this London trio seriously, no matter how carefully they've studied the early '80s. Songs such as "Mother Tongue," "Getting Even," and "Be Your Man" show an awareness of the pitfalls in this approach and deliberately seek to be as accessible as they are potentially dark. "Change" is where White Lies slow down for a ballad that seeks to drain every tearduct. The deluxe edition adds seven demos that display the group's talents with less reverb and more band interplay.

Enough hooks to make a fisherman weep

White Lies do that icy, reverb-soaked, 80s influenced sound that I love and this is certainly more akin to their first album than the hit-or-miss sophomore effort. I'd say they've veered slightly into early Killers territory with some of the production and feel, but the hooks are there and they are massive. 'Getting Even', 'Goldmine', 'Big TV', 'First Time Caller', and the opening single 'There Goes Our Love Again' are particular standouts. This is probably White Lies most consistant album to date. One of my favorites this year.

Tengo el disco anterior y me habian parecido buenos pero con este disco subieron a la categoria de EXCELENTES, se volvieron mas optimistas y menos oscuros. No podes dejar de escucharlos

Best Ever!

This is the best album out of all the others. Does not disapoint!

Formed: 2004 in London, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

A dark-edged trio hailing from London, White Lies take sonic cues from the likes of Joy Division, the Teardrop Explodes, and Echo & the Bunnymen. Indeed, the three musicians are so committed to the U.K.'s post-punk scene that they signed with Fiction Records, a Polydor imprint best known for its '80s releases by the Cure and the Associates. While attending school in West London, singer/guitarist Harry McVeigh, bassist/lyricist Charles Cave, and drummer/keyboardist Jack Lawrence-Brown formed the group...
