EDITORS’ NOTES

For anybody fascinated by Bob Dylan’s eclectic covers approach on Self Portrait, he doubles down on that m.o. here. While Dylan is undoubtedly in his comfort zone gliding coolly across traditional folk tunes like “Mary Ann” and “Lily of the West,” it’s an equal thrill to hear him head into less-expected corners, like his slightly Caribbean-inflected take on Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi” or his impassioned country-soul stroll through the old Elvis Presley smash “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”

I know, I know. EVERYONE hates this album. I did also. In the wake of "Another Self-Portrait", I pulled out my old lp and gave it a spin expecting to listen to the first few seconds of each song with a big smirk on my face. I was pleasantly surprised. It is at least as good as the other Self-Portrait, New Morning era performances. Yes it has a spaced out version of Big Yellow Taxi. But I think it is tame compared to "Blue Moon". His singing is great once he wakes up and the Dylanettes in the background can be a little over bearing at times, but I have always liked his female backup singers. Yes, some of the performances seem like run throughs and maybe another take would have nailed it, but you won't be grinding your teeth either. The remastering sounds very good also. It will never rival "Tempest", "Blood on the Tracks" or Blonde on Blonde", but if you like Self-Portrait, give this another listen and be prepared to be surprised.

Worthy Addition!

So happy this has finally been made available by itself, although would love to see a separate CD release outaide of the box set. I did own the vinyl copy before I got rid of my vinyl collection. I love Dylan's spin on Can't Help Falling In Love This album is a worthy addition to Mr Dylan's catalogue.

I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FOR YEARS!

I have been looking for this album for years! I had a copy of Mr. Bojangles years ago and I accidentally deleted it and could never get it back. I am so happy that this has finally been released on iTunes!
