The incredible talent of the amazing Billy Joel
The incredible talent of the amazing Billy Joel is finally exposed to all in this gift of classical artistry. Proving once and for all that this man has the ability and versatility to conquer every aspect of the music industry. His mastery of the Piano Forte puts him at the apex of his career. 100 years from now Billy Joel will be listed with histories musical geniuses. Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart and Joel a tribute to his incredible talent. Thank you Mr. Joel, from Tom Verola a great admirer.
Reminds me of Schumann
Basically I liked it. Not as much as I hoped, but it was better than I feared it might be. I expected it to have more melodies that would stick in my mind, but there were only 1 or 2 that I felt did that. Parts reminded me of Robert Schumann. But overall, I enjoyed it, and it's a nice 1st classical album. I hope he does more.
Billy Joel - Truly the Piano Man
I'm not a student of music, I'm not a huge fan of classical music and I love Billy Joel as a singer, songwriter and now composer. I've read reviews of this album on several different sites and their seems to be two schools of thought. One is Billy is ripping off the classics and two that he is paying homage to them, but neither of schools seem to give him credit for what he has done here.
I have enjoyed some classical music throughout my life and have recently got the bug for it again. In the process of this rediscovery of artists like Chopin, Pachelbel, Mozart, Grieg, and Beethoven among others, I came across Jim Brickman's work on the piano which reminded me of my favorite singer/songwriter's album of Classical music. I purchased this without hesitation and have listened to it several times through.
Fantasies and Delusions is an album that expresses Billy's love for the piano and what it can do. He uses complex (to my ears) structures balanced with delicate strains to evoke a mood. If you go back and listen to Nocturne from Cold Spring Harbor, you will see that not only is it a foreshadow to this album, but you will also see how much he has grown as a composer and artist. Billy's work here, I think, is reflective of his life and experiences just like his other albums have been, but it also a testament to his talent. Instead of an album of him playing standards, he has composed his own work and put it out there for the world to see. To hear a composition like this in this era of autotune, lipsynched concerts and electronic media is a joy to hear and experience. Billy and Richard have created music that will stand the test of time and that will be repeating on my playlists of instrumental, piano and Billy Joel music.
Take this album for what it is, a brilliant collection of original compositions by a man who loves the piano and knows how to create beautiful music with it. I would love him to put out another. :)
