iTunes Review

As a preface to an ambitious 2011 reissue campaign that promises rarities from the vaults, previously unavailable studio tracks, live performances and home video releases, Columbia/Legacy kicks things off in 2010 with the career-spanning 19-track The Hits. While The Hits offers nothing new for the hardcore fan, it’s a solid collection for those who are just getting caught up. Beginning with “Everybody Loves You Now” from 1971’s Cold Spring Harbour, things quickly go hit-single crazy with “Piano Man,” “New York State of Mind,” “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song),” “My Life” all through to 1993’s “The River of Dreams.” Joel’s astonishing career is a testament to daring pop choices. His love of Frankie Valli (“The Longest Time,” “Tell Her About It”), his quick approximation of new wave (“It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me),” his social commentaries (“Allentown,” “We Didn’t Start the Fire”) and his peerless songcrafting (“Pressure,” “I Go to Extremes”) all come together in one succinct collection.

It's Time For Something New

I've been a Billy Joel fan since I was 12 years old. He was my very first concert, way back in 1984 during the "Innocent Man" tour, and like your first kiss, it stays with you the rest of your life.

That being said, it's tiresome to see all of these "Greatest Hits" packages without a single new tune to remind us of how great a songwriter Billy once was. In an era when the creative and inspirational power of pop music has been diminished by Auto-Tune, it would be exciting to hear what Billy's musical and lyrical voice would sound like today, 17 years after the release of his last album of new material. It would be a thrill to hear what a 21st Century Joel would have to say about his world and ours. Sadly, it doesn't seem like that will ever happen.

So I won't buy it. I can't buy it. I already have it. Billy Joel, you were my childhood hero, there's at least one more story for you to tell I believe. It doesn't have to be radio-friendly, in fact it shouldn't be, because the radio is no longer worthy of your talents. It just has to be yours, true to your own artistry, and that would be a welcome enough addition that would greatly help to fill the void that's been left behind.

Another Reissue?!?!

Do they expect us to rebuy all his stuff again?! Cmon now

Another "hits" album??

Why oh why do we need another issue of Billy's hits? I love Billy but I have all his cd's but I do not need another re-issue....I wish Billy would do another album...I know he has it in him! C'mon Billy, give us some more of great songs!

Although Billy Joel never was a critic's favorite, the pianist emerged as one of the most popular singer/songwriters of the latter half of the '70s. Joel's music consistently demonstrates an affection for Beatlesque hooks and a flair for Tin Pan Alley and Broadway melodies. His fusion of two distinct eras made him a superstar in the late '70s and '80s, as he racked an impressive string of multi-platinum albums and hit singles. Born in the Bronx, Joel was raised in the Long Island suburb of Hicksville,...
