Album Review

Like the title implies, Morningwood's second album is all about two things, sparkly sparkly pop and driving rock. The record blends power pop with glammy dance rock excess, sounding a bit like Brassy or a less intense, female Andrew W.K. "The Best of Me" (also the theme song for VH1's Daisy of Love), which jumps out of the gate with big guitars and vaguely tribal percussion, is an easy-to-like and easier-to-dance-to pop single if there ever were one. The real high points of the album come when the rock makes its way to the forefront. "Killer Life" and "Snobby Little Elf" are solid, arena-ready power pop singalongs, with both songs drawing you in with a bit of a buildup before exploding into instantly catchy choruses. Morningwood are moving to get out of the rock club and into the nightclub, and Diamonds & Studs is an album that's easy on the ears and hard on dancefloors.

take off your clothes!

this album is hot hot hot. I always felt like morningwood the band was so much more amazing than their self titled release three years prior would lead you to believe. it had its good tracks (like jetsetter and take off your clothes) but overall the non-a-side singles lacked a certain oomph. this album has plenty of that oomph, in every single track. it brings to mind lacing a pop melody with a heavy rock/metal backbone and feeding some speed into the mix. completely electric, perfect to get amped up for a night out or to blast as you drive/work/whatever. 3 years in the making and a true labor of love between chantal and pedro, this album rocks!

I love Morningwood!

Chantal& pedro. Merci. I really needed some kind of miracle to finish this history paper tonight... I found it. And it came in the form of this cd ;)
upbeat, awesome pop, morningwood has this crazy unique sound, really great.
"killer life"is maybe my favorite...but its hard to choose, there all great.

An awesome step up with the same spirit

I enjoy Morningwood's first offering, but this is a fantastic step upwards. The songs are more solid and consistent, and there are catchy hooks all over the place. This is fun, rock-n-roll electro pop with a whole lot of attitude. Chantal's vocals are confident and unique, and the sound is cohesive and never ever boring. All in all, well worth the wait! Stand out tracks are Sugarbaby and How You Know It's Love. Cat in a Box is a softer side to Morningwood, quietly anguished, and it works beautifully. Brava!

Formed: 2001 in New York City

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

New York City's Morningwood brought a delightfully trashy and hedonistic sense of fun to alternative pop/rock in the early 21st century. Led by vocalist Chantal Claret, whose colorful and sexy approach owed much to the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde and the Divinyls' Christina Amphlett, the Big Apple foursome formed in 2001, molding elements of hard rock, punk, new wave, and glam rock into a sex-driven amalgam of sound. Core members Claret and bassist Pedro Yanowitz (an ex-member of the Wallflowers,...
