iTunes Review

Why is Tonéx depicted as bound and gagged on the cover of 2009’s Unspoken, his first album in five years? Whatever the image signifies, this gifted singer/songwriter gets to say his piece on this outstanding and frequently daring release. Tonéx (or Ton3x, if you prefer) shifts from the unambiguous gospel of his previous albums to something more eclectic here. Urban rhythms undulate beneath snarling electric guitars, silky keyboards, and quirky background vocals. Tonéx stretches his multi-octave range mightily, scaling falsetto heights on “Glor3x” and dropping to a whisper on “Again.” Tracks like “Fiyah,” “Bring It” and “Face Down” clatter and seethe with the sort of abandon Prince achieved in his heyday. In contrast, “Joy” and “Unspoken” drift and flutter on elegant sonic waves. Amidst these kaleidoscopic sounds is a benign spiritual message, couched in terms of acceptance and unity. Unspoken may ruffle the feathers of gospel purists, but for those with ears to hear, it spreads the Word with eloquence and more than a little courage.

Glad that you are back

Tonex is one of the most gifted and talented artist to come around in probably the last 10 years. He had been going through some personal things over the past few years and unfortunately due to some horrible hypocrisy and legalism in the church I think it led him to become somewhat disillusioned. You were always in our prayers tonex and we wish you God's best as you pursue His new path for your life and your ministry. Keep keeping it real brother.

Okay, yes, Tonex is back. However, as a Tonex fan, I don't find that this was his best work. I can't understand a lot of what he's saying therefore I cannot understand the message. I know as an artist people evolve, but I think that if you're calling yourself a gospel artist the message is more important than the music itself.

Tonex is To-Nice

This man is one of the most talented and gifted people in the music industry. Yes, he has gone through some struggles, but that still has not hindered him. This CD is like a breath of fresh air to the bland, monotonous music on the radio. I still find it kind of funny that it's under R&B when it still has gospel songs. It would be a shame if his religious fans don't buy this CD just because of the genre it's categorized in...5 STARS - GREAT CD!!!!!

Born: May 16, 1975

Genre: Christian & Gospel

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Singer/songwriter, producer, and youth leader Tonex was unafraid to rock the waves in contemporary Christian music, for his musical antics have been compared to the likes of Prince. His brash combination of gospel and R&B was first introduced on the Verity Records compilation WOW Gospel 2000. In September 2000, Tonex made his solo debut...
