iTunes Editors’ Notes

In traditional Britpop fashion, these two London-based rockers have released an awesome EP with a couple of b-sides that rival the leading single “Black Balloon.” Nothing at all against the first song — it’s definitely one of the major highlights of the Kills’ 2008 album Midnight Boom. Alison Mosshart’s vocals sound coy, seductive and euphoric all at once before shifting into a more driving dynamic on her short, allocated harmonies with Jamie Hince. And of course the glam-rock inspired hand-claps are a really nice touch. But on “Weedkiller” her flirtatious inflections turn into a salacious snarl that snakes around angular arrangements of grunting guitars and almost mechanical sounding beats. The stripped-down “Fourty Four” struts with a dangerous ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll vibe that’s more delinquent sounding than anything by the Raveonettes. Here Mosshart sings with a nothing-to-lose confidence and a switchblade cool that invokes images of the kind of leather-clad, miscreant woman who would give Lee Marvin a run for his money in the 1953 movie The Wild One.

A treat!!

I love Black Balloon and have for the past year. Who knows why The Kills included Black Balloon on this album, but I am glad they did. The other 2 songs on the album are new, and for more new music by The Kills, check out their album released 3 months ago, in January. I am looking forward to again hearing and seeing The Kills live-- in less than 2 weeks!!

Enchanting

I love the kills... this music is intoxicating and "Black Balloon" is already my new favorite song...

The bluesy punk duo the Kills consist of vocalist/guitarist VV, aka Alison Mosshart, formerly of the Florida punk band Discount, and drummer/guitarist/vocalist Hotel, aka Jamie Hince. After Discount ended in 2000, VV began exchanging tapes with the London-based Hotel through the mail, but both of them felt hindered by this method, so VV crossed the Atlantic so the duo could write faster. In spring of 2001, they issued a self-released demo that showcased their gritty, sexy sound and earned favorable...
