Album Review

They say that turmoil can help fuel an artist to come up with inspired work, and that may very well be the case for the longtime leader of Lilys, Kurt Heasley. Experiencing upheaval in his personal life, Heasley had to put his family ahead of finishing off the recording of Lilys' eight release overall, Everything Wrong Is Imaginary. But Heasley came up with a plan — instead of spending long amounts of time in the studio, he was able to get the job done at home. Putting his vocals and guitar parts down on tape at his own studio, the tracks were then sent to producer Michael Musmanno (best known for working with hip-hop acts like OutKast), who filled in the missing spaces with various studio musicians. What you get is another quirky and eclectic Lilys set, which includes everything from laid-back funk ("A Diana's Diana") to up-tempo ditties that sound quite comparable to the Eels at times (the album opening "Black Carpet Magic"). Although Lilys is often thought of as a "one-man band," Heasley appears to have found a worthy partner in crime with Musmanno, as evidenced by their collaborative work on Everything Wrong Is Imaginary.

Customer Reviews

So excited for this . . .

The Lilys: perhaps one of the most underrated yet influential forces in "psych-rock"--but they are so much more. I've already got "Knocked On the Fortune Teller's Door" on continuous play. See them live if you can--Kurt Heasley (the frontman) is even more magical in person . . .

Favorite for 2006 so far

I can't stop listening to this album. Hearing "A Diana's Diana" got me interested in hearing more and the whole album is great. I have no idea how to describe the album but wonderfully fun quirk pop.

Love

I love this album. It's so weirdly catchy.

Biography

Formed: Philadelphia, PA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s

The geographically and stylistically nomadic indie rock band Lilys was the vehicle of singer/songwriter Kurt Heasley, the group's founder and sole constant member. A Philadelphia native, Heasley and Lilys bowed with the 1991 single "February 14," a nod to My Bloody Valentine; while based in Washington, D.C., they recorded their 1992 debut LP, In the Presence of Nothing, an even greater testament to their shoegazing fetish. A two-year silence followed as Heasley roamed the East Coast, finally resurfacing...
