iTunes Review

The Best of Mercyful Fate looks at the band’s seminal early years from 1982 to 1984. During this time, they released the Mercyful Fate EP, the Melissa album, and the classic Don’t Break the Oath, all of which came out on the esteemed underground metal label Roadrunner. While the band continued to record classic songs well into the '90s, they never sounded as raw as they are here. You can hear pieces of Motörhead colliding with Rush and Judas Priest, while songs like “Return of the Vampire” betray a kinship to punk bands like The Misfits and The Ramones. Still, no one would ever mistake the young Mercyful Fate for another group. They were one of the era's most original metal acts, thanks in large part to singer King Diamond, who was the first frontman to wear corpse paint and who sang in a capricious falsetto that could sound magnificent and unhinged, often in the same moment. “A Corpse Without a Soul,” “Evil,” and “Into the Coven” remain some of black metal’s most enticingly catchy songs, but don’t overlook the band’s more challenging tracks. The 11-minute “Satan’s Fall” is a harrowing masterwork.

Without Mercyful Fate so many other good bands would not excist or at least not be the same. This is a truly great set of tunes, you won't find this kind of intesity anywhere else. Puts new black metal like the fake cradle of filth to shame!

this is METAL

I Frekin love this album. My favorites are the curese of the pharohs and evil .these guys rock!

A great compilation

This is a very fun album for anyone new to Mercyful Fate. The first album is well represented as you might expect. These guys influenced a lot of metal bands way back for good reason. The lyrics can sometimes be a little over-the-top "evil" stuff, but the music and the singing are amazing.

Years Active: '80s, '90s

Danish band featuring vocalist King Diamond, guitarists Hank Shermann and Michael Denner, bassist Timi Hansen, and drummer Kim Ruzz. Mercyful Fate won a large cult following thanks to their dramatic lyrics, showing a Gothic obsession with evil and the occult, and Diamond's amazing vocal range, which shifted from a low growl to a banshee scream, plus the interplay of Shermann and Denner. The band broke up after two full-length albums owing to differences of opinion about what direction the group should...
