iTunes Review

With Superunknown, Soundgarden left grunge behind for good. Arriving just as Nirvana were in their death throes and Pearl Jam were becoming increasingly weary of life in the spotlight, Soundgarden’s fourth album eagerly seized the mantle for arena-ready alternative rock. From the bone-cracking thrust of “My Wave” to the Beatlesesque power ballad “Black Hole Sun” to the doomy metallic monster “4th of July,” Superunknown blew Soundgarden’s musical scope wide open and foregrounded their latent pop sensibility—but not at the expense of the band’s essential, mosh-pit-baiting heaviosity.

Has it really been 20 years already?? Time flies.

Now I feel old. I remember my mom and dad listening to stuff like Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath and I thought that was great but still old school. Now I hear Soundgarden and think the same. Its great because all the same stuff is on and its greatness cant be disputed. I already have 75% of whats on here. I love them but there is no reason for people like myself to spend $25 for what you already have. Anyone who is just figuring out who they are would only have to buy this one album. I recommend getting the actual cd albums. Chris Cornell and Kim are super smart on the instuments they incorporate in their songs. WHo would have though a banjo would work so well in hard rock. They are the kings of 90's Hard Rock. Yes they are Hard Rock!

20 years later, still a phenomenal venture by four talents! Good luck tonight.

Soundgarden made a place for heavy metal in alternative rock. Their fellow Seattle rockers Green River may have spearheaded the grunge sound, but they relied on noise rock in the vein of the Stooges. Similarly, Jane's Addiction were too fascinated with prog rock and performance art to appeal to a wide array of metal fans. Soundgarden, however, developed directly out of the grandiose blues-rock of Led Zeppelin and the sludgy, slow riffs of Black Sabbath. Which isn't to say they were a straight-ahead...
