Black Letters

Black Letters

Finding masterful hard rock bands in Hollywood was once as easy as finding a bar, but in 2014 they’ve become as scarce as a rainy day in L.A. Living Dead Lights fulfill a great need with their debut album, Black Letters. All 12 songs are written as potential anthems, with musical and lyrical hooks so strong that should an audience take them up on it, they’ll be singing the songs by the end of the night. This is a mix of hard rock, metal, punk, emo and more metal. “Hey Stranger!” blisters with the kind of shameless aggression that hasn’t been convincingly heard since the days of Guns N’ Roses, before the '90s grunge takeover turned rockers into reflective poets. Not here. From the opening brawl of “I’ll Be Your Frankenstein” (where, in two and a half minutes, the band announce their intentions to steamroll over the doubters) through to the power chords of “This Is Our Evolution” and the repeating mantra “I’m the voice inside of your head” on “I’m Dead to Myself,” Black Letters could be an essential hard rock album for a new generation of rockers.
