iTunes Review

Austin's Gary Clark Jr. grew up in one of the nation's most musical cities so it's no surprise just how diverse his influences are. He's drawing from a world between '60s psychedelia and hip-hop song structure. Stylistically, his major label debut offers some fuzztone-drenched blues riffs wrapped around bits of classic rock and R&B. With songs like "Numb" and "Ain't Messin 'Round", he fits more in with the blues crowd that identifies with The Black Keys than any of your Hall of Fame axe-wielders. It's precisely this element–invoking passion and stripped-down power over licks–that makes Gary Clark Jr. such a fascinating figure.

AMAZING

Heard him on my Pandora station and been in love ever since! Great that he reps Texas cause the sound couldn't be any better. Love the different style and multiple style that he has, all which I love when it comes to music. Can't wait to catch him in concert one day.

this is awesome.

I can't believe some of the reviews here that criticize him for trying out the other genres, and saying that it was a "waste." All the songs here are amazing and are ironically better than most of the other similar popular songs out right now from "rappers" and "singers". I'd take the deep bittersweetness of "the life" over lil wayne any day. He beat them at their own game. True, we all kind of wanted a reincarnated Jimi Hendrix / Robert Johnson feel out of the guy, but that doesn't mean we should be angry he gave us ONLY a few of each. That just seems ridiculous. He's just TRYING the other stuff. We KNOW he'll do more fuzz-blues albums eventually, let's just enjoy whatever he did right now. My only criticism is the stuff already released. He has to start having more confidence in his new material rather than keep throwing in "safe songs" to keep idiots like you happy.

Hype hype

This guy is mediocre at best

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Texas guitarist Gary Clark, Jr. has been compared to guitar icons like Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and his playing is a powerful and inspired mix of blues roots with contemporary soul and hip-hop, and when he's rolling at his best, he sounds like nothing so much as a natural hybrid of both the past and the future of the blues. Born and raised in Austin, Texas, Clark first picked up a guitar at the age of 12 and spent his teens playing whatever gig he could get in the Austin area, eventually...
