Editors’ Notes

1985's Biograph was a perfect tease, offering a smattering of obscurities among Bob Dylan's greatest hits. But 1991's first volumes of The Bootleg Series—a three-CD set at the time—was what hardcore Dylan fans had craved for decades. It acknowledged the vast bootleg market that Dylan had inspired with the first rock "bootleg," The Great White Wonder. Suddenly, in the best fidelity ever unearthed for these rare songs—and with many welcome surprises—were recordings as important to the Dylan legacy as those officially released over the years. The original versions of songs from Blood on the Tracks (especially the slow, brooding acoustic take of "Idiot Wind"), the long-rumored "She's Your Lover Now" (still incomplete but brilliantly executed), the eloquent heartbreaking demo of "Every Grain of Sand," and studio outtakes of "Blind Willie McTell" and "Series of Dreams" comprised an alternate history of one of popular music's most important and influential figures.

Great Find!

Though the unfamiliar Dylan songs were daunting, after getting up the courage to buy the set it has turned out to be not the left overs but the unused cream of Dylan's plethora of music. I strongly recommend that every Bob Dylan fan buy this collection!

she's a healer...in you

just one track is worth it. #22, first disc. close your eyes, listen...the rest...icing on the bread pudding, some of his best. at least spend the dollar...it'll sneak into ur dreams

By far the best of the "Bootleg Series"

While Bootleg Series Vol. 4, The Royal Albert Hall Concert, is amazing, this is by far the best of the Bootleg Series releases. If you are a Dylan junkie, there are so many rare treasures on this record that you simply must have. If you are a Dylan noob, then there is no better place to start exploring some of Dylan's lesser-known tracks then with this record. Several of these tracks are simply haunting and will stay with you all day. Buy this record - you will not be disappointed!

Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-consciousness narratives. As a vocalist, he broke down the notion that a singer must have a conventionally good voice in order to perform, thereby redefining the vocalist's role in popular music. As a musician, he sparked several genres of pop music, including electrified folk-rock and country-rock....
