iTunes Editors’ Notes

Released as a double disc, To Venus and Back consists of an 11-song studio album, Venus Orbiting, and a 13-track live collection, Venus Live, Still Orbiting. Amos is that rare performer whose mastery of her instruments — piano and vocals — deepens with time. She's a living contradiction, an artist whose work is emotionally compelling and harrowingly personal, yet sheltered in private imagery and unorthodox pronunciations that deliberately obscure her intentions and meanings. “Bliss” begins the dark journey with “Juarez” following with firm, tense beats chasing a hallucinatory vocal that channels another dimension. “Josephine” strips down to piano, bass and drums for a nearly naked performance. The live collection features a number of fan favorites – “Cornflake Girl” and “The Waitress” – alongside some less expected material. With a solid backing band that follows her every whim, Amos is free to expand beyond the studio interpretations, twisting words for different meanings and keeping fans excited to hear where she’s taking them next.

"Who do I have to shag to get outta here..."

To Venus & Back by Tori Amos is my favorite album from the Goddess of Weird. I almost let this double album slip by, at first I thought this album was too experimental but then I realized - that was a good thing! The first cd are studio versions of new tracks, the second cd are live performances featuring some of Tori's earlier hits like Cornflake Girl, Bells for Her, and Space Dog. Tori really came alive during this period - I am so glad I gave this album a second chance. In my opionion, Venus contains some of Tori's best lyrics - download this gem today!

To Venus and Back... the same as Now

I just went to see Tori tonight... and while I love her with a passion, my passion is connected to the albums she put out before To Venus and Back. Tori has some awesome songs on this album, but there are clear misses. The live album is awesome... as it has my favorite drummer in the world, Matt Chamberlain. The point is, if you want a good sampling of Tori's live feel even now, this is it. But after a few cuts on the album, I felt like Tori - in trying to make pianos sound like guitars - just ends up repeating the same vocal schtick. She's much more powerful with just herself and the piano... maybe I'm jealous and I want to steal her rhythm section for myself. On "These Precious Things" it works, and it works for real. On Waitress, YES. Yet, her uber-reverb vocals (pumped up for the band) just aren't the same for a hard-core fan who's used to the intimacy of Miss T. "Choirgirl" I highly recommend... but truthfully, it did start to go a bit downhill here. All other Tori albums prior get five stars, this one's a four, because of the awesome rhythm section.

Goddess Meets Venus

A legend. Beautiful album.

Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos) was one of several female singer/songwriters who combined the stark, lyrical attack of alternative rock with a distinctly '70s musical approach, creating music that fell between the orchestrated meditations of Kate Bush and the stripped-down poetics of Joni Mitchell. In addition, she revived the singer/songwriter traditions of the '70s while re-establishing the piano as a rock & roll instrument. With her 1992 album Little...
