Lost Isles

Lost Isles

The debut album from these rising U.K. metalcore heroes proves that both hard-spitting melody and mosh-pit histrionics can work well on the same album, even in the same tune. Knuckle-pumping choruses cut through dark surges (“Vultures and Sharks,” “Blood Brothers”), and songs like “Floorboards” cast emo shadows and proggy guitar harmonics underneath floorboard-rattling vocals. And “Over the Edge” and “High Horse” might be what nervous breakdowns sound like. Album themes include corporate evil, loyalty, and death. Tender moments are only hinted at: the intro to “Linger,” for example, creates a false calm before the sonic sucker-punches fly.
