a reggae painted masterpiece
This is the original Dylan reggae cover lp, and it is a true masterpiece and gem. The Mighy Diamonds who have been perfroming for over 30 years together open this cd with an inspirational and spiritual roots reggae take on the song "I shall be released." Judy Mowatt one of Bob Marleys famed I-Threes reaches deep into her sould and does a truly touching version of the Dylan classic "Knockin on Heavens Door." All the trax on the album are both fun and work perfectly in the reggae vibe. This album shows the timelsss versitility of one of the greatest songwriters of all time. The fact these all the songs work demonstrate Dylans ability to connect with a wide range of audiences. Ironically i enjoyed some of these reggae covers more than original versions. i never heard Bob Dylans words come throught more clear. This would be the perfect soundtrack for the summer, chillin at the beach or in the car, this album is part of a series of reggae tributes to rock. Other standouts in the series "Paint it Black" a reggae tribute to the Rolling Stones. If you love rock and/or reggae buy either cd and get a lifetime of fun from it.
heart, soul and fun
this album has become the soundtrack for my last two summers. Bob Dylan is one of the most covered artistes in histroy, but this reggae take on his material is full of heart and soul and is agreat album to listen to. Reggae icons like The Mighty Diamonds around for over 30 years, alongside The Abyssianians, Chalice and Judy Mowatt show why they are reggae's most repected artistes as the do their thing on Bob' songs. There are newcomers here too, and although I never heard of some, Sugar Black's heartwrenching "Just Like a Woman" is one of the highlights, and Bradley Brown's "Forever Young" is sung the way the song should be. If u love either Dylan or Reggae this is a must for the collection.
A heartfelt tribute...
I was really touched by this reggae tribute to Dylan, I though it really did justice to the songs they selected to cover. ON songs like "I shall be released," "Blowin in the Wind" and "Times They are Changing" the reggae feel brings out the revolutionary songwriter that Dylan is. While on "Big Girl Now" and "Just Like a Woman" Bob's emotionally charged songwriting is emphasized by the soulful longing of the singers. Mighty Quinn and Dont Think Twice turn out as upbeat party tracks. Like I mentioned in other revues in the "Reggae Rocks series" this album is a great way to introduce kids and young people to Bob Dylan's music and songs, in a hip, easily absorbed way.
