iTunes Review

In the U.K. in the late '80s and early '90s, hyper-processed guitar washes and dreamy vocals joined forces to form what would be dubbed shoegazer music, epitomized by groups like My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Ride, and Slowdive. Hailing from Holland, The Nightblooms never were as popular as any of those bands, but they still put out some exceptional music. The Nightblooms released several obscure singles, a pair of EPs, and three full-length albums between 1988 and 1993, recording for labels like Fierce, Fire, and Paperhouse. This is their self-titled debut LP from 1992; it finds them diving in head-first, crafting 10 songs ideal for moody romantic interludes and solitary consciousness-expanding. While not as noisy as records by The Jesus & Mary Chain nor as gleefully fried as those by Spacemen 3, this is still a wildly entertaining time capsule. It's held up surprisingly well over the last two decades. Check out "Starcatcher (1)," "Slowly Rising," "59 #1," and "Blue Marbles."
