iTunes Editors’ Notes

The early '70s were a golden era for singer-songwriter albums, but few reached the sublime heights of Blue. Even by Mitchell's standards, this was an extraordinarily soul-baring work, from the head-over-heels joy of "All I Want" to the regret of "River" and resolve of "The Last Time I Saw Richard." Mitchell's gift for storytelling makes "This Flight Tonight," "Carey," and "A Case of You" beautifully rendered vignettes of fleeting love and indelible heartache. Built around her acoustic guitar, piano, and dulcimer, Blue's tracks are perfectly austere. Whether Mitchell's voice soars to feathery highs or descends to somber lows, her emotions are always palpable. Blue is the best of Mitchell's albums, and one listen reveals why.

Original Tracks?

I loved this album when it was released in 1971. I probably listened to it over 500 times on my stereo (on vinyl). But somehow I don't think these are the original tracks from that album. They sound like studio cuts from a decade later or perhaps remastered cuts with the original orchestration changed. It is deeply disturbing to me to listen to Carey, This Flight Tonight and River and feel something is missing. It you were not an early 1970s Joni fan, you might not have this feeling and, of course, these songs and this album are unique creations in the history of folk rock. I just want my original cuts back. Can anyone help me with this?

Joni's best

By far the best Joni Mitchel album. If you like folk music you must get this album. If you like rock and roll you must get this album.

No female artist better typified the singer/songwriter movement of the '70s than Joni Mitchell, though her public image as the serious, sensitive woman with a guitar shortchanged her abilities, ambitions, and accomplishments. Mitchell's gift for writing personal, folk-inspired songs about the thorny side of life and love was inarguable (particularly on albums like 1970's Ladies of the Canyon and 1971's Blue), but Mitchell also brought the same smarts and eloquence to glossy pop on her commercial...
