Album Review

Another of those Verve compilations that focus on a specific mood or aspect of repertoire, in order to maximize the mileage from back catalog. This focuses on Jimmy's ballads and slow groovers with an afterhours atmosphere. Given Smith's immense discography (at one time it seemed like he was on the album-a-month plan), it's really not a bad way for novices to acquaint themselves with more of his material, though this compilation doesn't have the pumping uptempo chuggers for which he's most renowned. The ten songs span 1963 to 1972 (all but one were recorded prior to 1967), and feature top-notch sidemen like Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, and Grady Tate.

Jackie Davis Revisited

Jimmy Smith is a very listenable organist and the recording catches that wonderful tone wheel Hammond sound. The "I'll close my eyes" arrangement is a pretty well identical with Jackie Davis's track on "Hi-Fi Hammond" cut in the fifties. I enjoyed this album over some good single malt and a good dose of nostalgia. I recommend both the album and the single malt.

West Coast Cool

Get a glass of your favorite brew, put a fire in the fireplace, cuddle up with your favorite person and be transported by the sound of this CD! Kenny Burrell lays down a beautiful line that blends so great with the master of the organ. If you like romantic jazz, this is your kind of music. It is one of my favorites. Download and enjoy!

Jimmy Smith wasn't the first organ player in jazz, but no one had a greater influence with the instrument than he did; Smith coaxed a rich, grooving tone from the Hammond B-3, and his sound and style made him a top instrumentalist in the 1950s and '60s, while a number of rock and R&B keyboardists would learn valuable lessons from Smith's example. James Oscar Smith was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania on December 8, 1928 (some sources cite his birth year as 1925). Smith's father was a musician and...
