Hollow Earth

Hollow Earth

While London, Los Angeles, and New York City—and eventually Seattle and Olympia, Wash.—have been well known for their punk scenes, New Jersey has always harbored the fast and the furious too. It's a lower-profile locale, but bands such as Bedlam, The Blisters, Adrenalin O.D., and Electric Frankenstein kept the Jersey scene alive for years (EF still do), while this next generation of young rockers have shown up to do further damage. The trio recalls the raw joy of Wire, X, Mission of Burma, and nameless '60s garage-pop bands all punked up. "Hollow Earth I" evokes a bargain-basement version of Weezer, while "Blurry," with angelic vocals from drummer Miranda Taylor, blurs the line between Blondie and K Records–type punk-pop. Jeff Schroek contributes vocals to the blast-first attack of "Flatland," where the guitars barrel out like Naked Raygun. The band balances the demands of punk and pop with the expertise of a much older and wiser band. Its youthful energy, however, ensures the songs never flag, and the enthusiasm's contagious.
