iTunes Review

Since 2005, Dragonette has been crafting memorable modern rock that often references the aesthetic of 1980’s technopop and new wave. Strong compositions and sharp productions give the songs on 2012’s Bodyparts, the London-by-way-of-Toronto quartet’s third studio album, a futuristic yet era-nonspecific sound. Singer/co-bandleader Martina Sorbara’s street-smart singing and unquestionable charisma continues to serve as a Dragonette trademark. “Run Run Run” opens Bodyparts with warm analog keyboard sounds and an "escape from metropolis" lyrical theme. The guitar-driven dance rock of “Live in This City” recalls mid-20th century girl groups with a spirited infusion of latter independence. “Let It Go” is full of infectious synth-based energy, while “Right Woman” goes full electro chic. A sequence line in the hook-filled “My Legs” seems to invoke fellow Canadian Corey Hart’s “Sunglasses at Night” with the acoustic closer “Cuckoo” a nod to Sorbara’s singer/songwriter past.

Dragonette is back at it!

Borrowing a bit of the raw sexuality from Galore and a splash of the rambunctious energy from Fixin' to Thrill, Dragonette's newest offering, Bodyparts is a fun poppy record that's easy to listen to, start to finish. The tone of the entire album feels much more mature than the previous two albums, less experimental but subtly more refined. Parts of the album evoke an "early 2000's Kylie Minogue" in a very good way. If your toes aren't tapping and your booty moving by the end of this CD, check your pulse. 5/5 stars.

Formed by singer/songwriter Martina Sorbara and her husband, bassist Dan Kurtz, Canadian electro-poppers Dragonette have drawn comparisons to the Scissor Sisters, No Doubt, and the Killers, thanks to the new wave sheen that dominated their early sound. However, as later albums like Bodyparts and the group's international hit "Hello," a collaboration with producer Martin Solveig proved, the group had a confident identity of their own. Prior to the formation of Dragonette, singer and lyricist Martina...
