Album Review

Even as she stepped out of the shadow of her renowned father, famed Brazilian composer and pianist Antonio Adolfo, Carol Saboya continued to make some brilliant collaborations with him — including this sensual, high-energy set of Ivan Lins and Milton Nascimento compositions, produced by Adolfo (who toured with Nascimento in the '60s). With the backing of Adolfo (piano), Claudio Spiewak (guitars), Jorge Helder (double bass), and Rafael Barata (drums, percussion), Saboya lends her authentic Brazilian soul and graceful charms to pieces like the passionate, soaring "Bola de Meia, Bola de Gude" (Nascimento), the airy, lighthearted romance "Abre Alas" (Lins), and the thoughtful and intimate "Anima" (Nascimento). Adding a unique, jazzy flair to several numbers, sax great Dave Liebman brings whimsical soprano harmony to the moody "Tristesse," and emotional depth to the eloquent, melancholy tune "Tarde." Hendrik Meurkens adds touches of harmonica charm to the dreamy "Doce Presence," a touching gem by Lins which includes English lyrics by Jane Monheit. Finding clever and seductive ways to interpret the works of two legends, Saboya contributes mightily to the legacy passed down to her by her father.
