iTunes Review

In 1984 former Z-Boy Stacy Peralta produced what many sports historians regard as the first skateboard video; The Bones Brigade Video Show was the first all-skateboarding featurette shot on video and sold in skate shops worldwide. Peralta assembled and managed the Bones Brigade, an elite team comprising notables Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, Danny Way, Steve Caballero and many others. Bones Brigade Video Tunes assembles the soundtracks from their first three videos: The Bones Brigade Video Show, 1985’s Future Primitive and 1987’s The Search For Animal Chin. Peralta commissioned Dennis Dragon of the Surf Punks to record most of these songs under various pseudonyms. Dragon had scored Jepsen’s ‘70s surf films and many tracks here are cheesy keyboard-based jams riddled with studio schmaltz that hasn’t aged well — but they sure are hilarious — as are numbers like Johnny Rad’s “Mctwist and Shout” and “Skate & Create,” a loungy reply to the Faction’s “Skate And Destroy.” Listening to these time-capsuled tunes of seminal ‘80s skateboard videos is almost as fun as skating itself.

Bones live on

The Bones Brigade videos where the first of there kind, introducing me to the legends of skateboarding alongside the likes of Johnny Rad. Anyone who's seen the movies, watched Stacy P dropped in on a 9 foot vert with no transition using only a TV will want to grab these songs up. I still board today, 15 years later, and these are in my rotation on my boarding songs.

SF Track

I love this part of the movie. It sums up the simplicity of the city with the melow sounds of the sax and bass, the cultural mix with the guitar rifts, xylaphone and chims, as the Brigade skates through the streets. Maybe a lot has to do with the fact that I'm from the Bay Area, but skateboarding and growing up watching Stacy's movies during the 80's brings me back to a time I will not soon forget...
