Album Review

Working with producer Paul Brown, Boney James' Boney's Funky Christmas is an entertaining set of loose, funky and bluesy interpretations of both classic Christmas carols ("The Christmas Song") and more obscure contemporary selections like "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas." Two selections, "This Christmas" and "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?," are sung by Dee Harvey and Bobby Caldwell, respectively, but the star of this show remains James and his saxophone, who breathe new life into these holiday cuts.

Just Amazing

All the songs here will put you in the holiday mood. I am a huge fan of Bobby Caldwell and I feel this version of "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" complete with the opening verse is the definitive version of this song, Kudos to Dee Harvey for his daring but updated version of Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas." The instrumentals are well-produced and stirring, again mood invoking.

Funky, Fun and Heartwarming

This is a great collection of holiday songs, played with passion by Boney. His rendition of Sleigh Ride has become one of my favorite Christmas songs, and This Christmas will get your toes tapping as you tackle those holiday chores. Beautiful, moving interpretations of Christmas Time is Here and The Christmas Song make this a truly wonderful holiday CD.

One of the BEST

I have had this CD for years and it is STILL in the top few of my favorite holiday CD's. I recommend it to everyone of any age - some of which chuckle at the title (not knowing Boney James). It's great for any party/get-together, tree trimming, or just the sheer pleasure of listening to some great music. Some holiday CD's I play a time or two, certain songs I cue up year after year, but this one gets a full play multiple times. Everyone will have a song or songs that they personally like best, so I won't subject you to my choices, you'll have your own. I will suggest you BUY IT! Happy listening.

A solid saxophonist whose style falls on the R&B and pop side of jazz, Boney James is a consistent best-seller who can always be relied upon to put on a colorful live show. Born James Oppenheim, he grew up in New Rochelle, New York. The future Boney James studied clarinet when he was eight, switching to saxophone two years later -- the instrument which began to show his heavy influence from Grover Washington, Jr. When he was 15, his family moved to Los Angeles. James was soon playing in a fusion...
