Album Review

On New York City's Gema label, El Gran Combo's releases are among the rarer and more authentic Latin soul albums. In addition to six boogaloos, Boogaloo con El Gran Combo has guaracha, son, son montuno, and a bomba. "Shake It Baby" is the liveliest of the boogaloos, and "Combolu" is very hip; all are good if one puts aside hopes for a great, lost hit single. Boogaloo con El Gran Combo is a fine listening album, to be appreciated for its great singing and a true Latin sound. All of El Gran Combo's boogaloo albums are well worth tracking down.

A Little Historical Perspective

"Boogaloos Con El Gran Combo" yielded two hits, "Gran Combo's Boogaloo," and "Clap Your Hands." This album was released around 1967, at the height of the Latin Boogaloo era. Though boogaloo was not their strong suit, El Gran Combo could ALWAYS be counted on to provide a top-notch professional effort. I think the beginning of "Gran Combo's Boogaloo" as it is here on iTunes has been clipped; as I remember it, it actually began with "Boogaloo, boogaloo hey, mi boogaloo" (repeated 3x), which is reprised towards the end of the track. Nonetheless, it was great to hear these two tracks again. cdiii
