These are the Kings of Western Swing

This album has the BEST selection of AATW songs that were re-recorded in the band's hometown of Austin, TX. The songs are all so tight sounding, and the music makes you want to get up and dance everytime you listen to them. A MUST HAVE for any true country music fan. If you want to know what Texas sounds like...you gotta get this CD.

The Wheel is Wide Awake!

If Western Swing is alive and well, it's because somebody was Asleep at the Wheel. That somebody is big Ray Benson, who has captained this crew in all its permutations for well over thirty years. His impeccable taste in music and choosing fellow Wheelers is evident in this magnificent collection of the very best of Western Swing. If I may blaspheme, The Wheel's rendition of Take Me Back to Tulsa exceeds that of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys – no mean feat. This music gets under your skin, goes down to your feet and threatens to make sure you'll never sit down again when you hear it. It is redolent of big Cadillacs, big hats, big sky, big trains, lotsa chrome trim and, of course, a very big talent. Every member of the band is distinct and virtuosic (is that a word?), yet they sing as tight as the Everly Brothers when they harmonize. This is an Essential Album for anyone, Western Swingers or otherwise.

Reminiscent

Reminiscent of the quality of the Mills Brothers set to Country swing. These good old boys just keep getting better. I heard then live at the Caboose in Minneapolis and they were good then. I will soon own every song they own. They are a nice diversion from the normal Country Music.

Since the early '70s, Asleep at the Wheel have been the most important force in keeping the sound of Western swing alive. In reviving the freewheeling, eclectic sensibility of Western swing godfather Bob Wills, the Wheel have earned enthusiastic critical praise throughout their lengthy career; they have not only preserved classic sounds that had all but disappeared from country music, but have also been able to update the music, keeping it a living, breathing art form. Typically featuring eight to...
