Editors’ Notes

Released when Esham was still a 16-year-old student at Detroit’s Osborn High School, Boomin’ Words from Hell is one of rap music’s most audacious debuts. Written, produced, and performed entirely by Esham (real name: Rashaam Attica Smith), the album is a stunning fusion of biting New York street hip-hop and the rapper’s self-styled “acid rap.” The lyrical content presents a vision of inner-city Detroit that is as detailed as it is harrowing. “No one scares me, no one dares me,” he spits on “Esham’s Boomin’,” “Shoot a brother in the back for crack 'cause no one cares, see." Esham told an interviewer in 2008, "It was all an expression about ('70s-'80s drug cartel) Young Boys Incorporated, Mayor Coleman Young, the city we lived in and just the turmoil that our city was going through at the time.” Esham’s flow is knife-sharp and he made beats to match. Blending live instrumentation with samples, the music is primitive but sophisticated. Even as a youngster he was taking risks with his music, and though it's connected to rap music from New York, the Bay Area, and the South, Boomin’ Words from Hell is at once outside its time and way ahead of it.

Should be 5 but.....

i love this album but it should of been remastered before it went on to itunes the volume is so low on it that if you have your ipod on shuffle you can barely hear it.OK now that thats out of the way this album is Esham 2nd album 1st was titled just BOOMIN but was in low print(most songs from that cd are on here some with diffrent lyrics and some with diffrent beats). This is a must have album it has reshaped modern day rap by it's influnce on rappers today (eminem, proof, obie trice, project born, icp, twiztid, and many many more).most know this as horrorcore and say it came from new york but the truth is it's acid rap and it came from Detroit.this album stir up controversey every where for it's blunt words about the world and it's problem and in many ways has paved the way for other rappers to be a little darker with their lyrics.Esham's dope bottom line.

I Can't Believe I Finally Found It!!

I have waited forever for itunes to get this album. This is one of the best rap albums EVER! It takes me back to hugh school and all the fun memories. If you like "Boondox" and "ICP" then you must add this album to your collection.

Another good one

Born: 1977 in Long Island, NY

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

As an underappreciated cult artist, Esham's harsh hardcore rap thrived in this hometown of Detroit, MI, for years before an ensemble of artists with a similar style began crossing over into the mainstream in the late '90s. Long before rock acts such as Limp Bizkit began rapping, long before rappers such as Kid Rock began rocking, Esham was integrating a rock influence into his rap in the early '90s, crafting a unique style of self-declared "acid rap." In fact, this term is rather fitting, given Esham's...
