Editors’ Notes

Emmylou Harris is one of those rare vocal talents. She can sing anything. Her musical apprenticeship alongside legendary country-rocker Gram Parsons practically ensured that she’d follow the country-music path and her record label stacked her sessions with premium talent throughout. However, her taste is far more eclectic. The Beatles’ “For No One” is orchestrated with mild country stylings, while “Boulder to Birmingham,” her stirring tribute to Parsons, uses every haunted country instrument available to convey the pending sorrow. A young, promising Texas songwriter named Rodney Crowell contributes the album’s opening cut “Bluebird Wine.” (Harris always finds struggling songwriters to champion). Country heavyweights like the Louvin Brothers and Merle Haggard have their tunes sung with breathtaking compassion (“If I Could Only Win Your Love” and “Bottle Let Me Down,” respectively). “Sleepless Nights” and “California Cotton Fields” were tunes sung back in her Parsons days. Dolly Parton’s “Coat of Many Colors” indicates just how ambitious Harris intended to be as she attempts another female country legend’s famous hit.

Customer Reviews

This is where to start...

This is the album to buy to begin your Emmylou Harris collection. The song choices are excellent and the production is perfect (crisper and more direct than that on "Luxury Liner", in my opinion). You get all that you would expect from Emmylou: heartbreaking, sighing vocals, perfect phrasing, and the amazing craft of her backing band. This album will make you a lifelong fan, and will be the first of many Emmylou albums you will want to own. If you've ever had a broken heart, just try to get through "Too Far Gone" without choking up...

Pieces of Beauty

Everything on this album is done well. It has a good balance too! Moods shift around on the listener. From the rollicking opener to the sad laments, Emmylou puts your heart on a cyclone of emotions. She co-worte "Boulder To Birmingham" and it shines alongside the many wonderful covers. The arrangements suit her voice and style perfectly. This is well worth buying the whole package.

Though other performers sold more records and earned greater fame, few had as profound an impact on contemporary music as Emmylou Harris. Blessed with a crystalline voice, a remarkable gift for phrasing, and a restless creative spirit, she traveled a singular artistic path, proudly carrying the torch of "cosmic American music" passed down by her mentor, Gram Parsons. With the exception of only Neil Young — not surprisingly an occasional collaborator — no other mainstream star established...
