Verily, Pure Pop for Now People

Choc-a-bloc with lyrical brilliance and delicious musical surprises, Boy King may be the crowning achievement of Bill Lloyd's distinguished and varied career. That would be saying something: Lloyd's solo debut Feeling the Elephant was among the most memorable independent pop-rock albums of the 1980s, and the alt-country work he and Radney Foster did as Foster & Lloyd was years ahead of its time. On this record, Lloyd writes in a mature voice without coming over as an oldster. Lloyd handles all of the instrumentation and production, and he comes up with a fresh sound that is redolent but never derivative of others in its power-pop genre, from the Beach Boys to Fountains of Wayne.
