Album Review

A work of uncommon sensitivity and depth, 1986's The Boy Who Could Fly remains one of the defining scores of Bruce Broughton's career as well as a welcome panacea to the overblown, soulless music that typically defines Hollywood fantasy of this kind. Broughton allows his nuanced melodies to speak for themselves, eschewing bombast and saccharinity in favor of understated orchestrations that nevertheless convey human drama in stunning detail. Percepto's limited-edition 2001 reissue appends 30 minutes of additional music cut from the original Varese Sarabande release as well as excellent liner notes highlighted by Broughton commentary.

Music that lets the misunderstood feel understood.

When I was in my teen years, I saw this film. At the time, I was - like all teenagers - struggling with feelings of insecurity, lack of identity and a sense of not being understood. Most guys won't admit it, but I will... I often looked for that girlfriend who was a lot like the one in this movie, who would understand me and love me for who I was... no matter how bizarre, how many problems I had, or how many pimples that were on my face. This movie let me dream. This music touched my heart, and I still never have forgotten this film or the music. Truly a gem! A dreamy jaunt through melodious reveries! You can't go wrong!

The Boy Who Could Fly

Long time ago when my life was filled with pain, i watched this movie. It gave me hope when hope was gone, The music moved me. I was so excited to find it! I wish i could find the movie again.

Soaringly Good!

Fantastic writing. The multiple variations on the gorgeous main theme are masterfully done. "In The Air" is arguably one of the most uplifting pieces ever written for film. Listeners should know that this is a re-recording with the Sinfonia of London, conducted by the composer. Superb as it is, it is not the recording which can be heard in the movie. That one was released by Percepto Records and will hopefully find its way to iTunes at some point.
