A Must Have!
I saw this album on the staff picks, and I was thrilled! This is one of my favorite albums, and I must say, I hate tribute albums. These guys, on the other hand, are at their best. Literally. Paul McCartney's version of "Partial to your Abracadabra" is one of Paul's best performances. I actually got this album as an import a few years ago, and I hadn't heard the original. While I am not going to say it is better, I will say it is nearly perfect. Ian Dury was brilliant, versatile, and his songs are so good they can be equally good as covers.
The people who gave this bad reviews really have no taste. Ian Dury was a great songwriter and this is one of the best tribute albums I've ever heard. Paul McCartney & Billy Bragg perform my favorite tracks (#3 & #5).
Taste? Who said anything about taste?
I bought this album when I was drunk and I loved it! As a sober person now, I can see how it could be on the obnoxious side. This album is the musical embodiment of everything I can't stand about the UK. That being said, it is also the perfect soundtrack to the mood I'm in when I can't be bothered to answer the telephone. Or when I'm drunk. Really, it is the perfect mix that I've been vaguely browsing for, and I'm happy I blew the money on it. There is a time and a place for this record; it expresses a very specific frame of mind.
