Customer Reviews

This album is absolutely wonderful. Any lover of Bach's music will find a good bargain and excellent recording of his best orchestral work here. Sir Neville Marriner is a great conductor and has the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields at its best. The sound quality is good, it sounds well-rehearsed, and every little detail can be picked up. In my opinion, the best Brandenburg Concerti/Orchestral Suites/Violin Concerti recording out there, bar none.

The Definitive Brandenburgs.

Prior to hearing Neville Marriner's performances of the Brandenburg Concertos, I could not tell one performance from another; but these recordings quickly became the standard in my mind. Since then I have heard plenty of terrible renditions of Bach: sometimes simply lacking energy and drive, sometimes replacing harpsichord with piano, sometimes using too many instruments and muddying the sound. If you want a complete collection of the Brandenburgs with period accuracy, high energy, and crystal-clear sound, I doubt you can do any better than this collection.

Grand Brandenburgs

I cannot submit a well-informed comparative analysis of these readings or offer instructive comments on the readings of the Orchestral Suites (since they were not originally offered as part of the analog offering). But I have to say that this recording of Concertos is stunningly beautiful.

Taking the meaning of ensemble playing to heart, the group decided to work without a conductor, as did many chamber orchestras of the Baroque period. In this cooperative spirit, the ensemble worked toward the brilliantly energetic sound and high standard of musicianship that have become its hallmarks. Unable to generate sufficient interest in concerts, the ensemble...
