Not For the Faint of Brain

Usually when one is told "this is not for you," it's because the contents may offend or cause harm, however SC5 is not for everyone because they are simply too good: Too clever, too adventurous, and too much fun. The album plays like an iPod set on shuffle filled with Brit-pop, garage rock, musical fragments, TV theme songs, and a battery with the polarity reversed. And that's just too much for people who adore the consistency of, say, the latest Uncle Kracker album. There are some solid gems here. "Silver Wave" is the best song Paul McCartney never wrote. "Winds Execute" is the logical successor to the 60s surf instrumental "Telstar." "Yellow Hammer" is an über-metal opera (well, you may disagree with that assessment). "Brandy On Fire" is beautiful, jangly pop. Puns abound (in case the band's name didn't tip you off, they have a sense of humor); it all adds to the charm. Rather than picking and choosing, though, just buy the whole album and listen to it as it was intended. You can always retreat to your Celine Dion catalog if you're in over your head. -a fan, not a paid endorser

Their debut LP Strum & Drum! surfaced in 1987; a collection of 20 brief, infectious pop tunes,...
