Album Review

The first of at least four meetings on record between the great Brazilian-styled guitarists Laurindo Almeida and Charlie Byrd, this very logical matchup (in a quartet with bassist Bob Magnusson and percussionist Milt Holland) is quite succesful. The music is tightly arranged with very little improvisation but the beauty of the two guitarist's distinctive tones and the colorful melodies makes this a rewarding set. From "Carioca" and Jobim's "Stone Flower" to several Brazilian classical pieces and even "Don't Cry For Me Argentina," everything works.

One of my MOST favorite Brazilian Jazz Albums!!

My father bought this for me when I was a kid (i'm 39 now) - and when I found that this is on itunes...I almost fell out of my chair - because I LOST it...and I've been looking for it! I only recognized the album cover...and knew this was the one I've been looking for. I love this album! Years of enjoyment!! More to come!

The simple pleasures of Brazilian Soul

Build a fire in the fireplace and put on Brazilian Soul. Life doesn't get better than that.

Two great masters of the guitar combine to make wonderful music. Byrd comes from a jazz background and Almeida can be pretty much called a classical guitarist. But clearly both are comfortable int each other's genre. Good music is good music, and any good musician can play all kids of music, as they do here.

Buy this alvum without hesitation.

Tasteful, low-key, and ingratiatingly melodic, Charlie Byrd had two notable accomplishments to his credit -- applying acoustic classical guitar techniques to jazz and popular music and helping to introduce Brazilian music to mass North American audiences. Born into a musical family, Byrd experienced his first brush with greatness while a teenager in France during World War II, playing with his idol Django Reinhardt. After some postwar gigs with Sol Yaged, Joe Marsala and Freddie Slack, Byrd temporarily...
