iTunes Review

In 2006, following a romantic breakup, Pete Yorn conceptualized a duet project along the lines of Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot’s work in the ‘60s. With Scarlett Johansson standing in for Bardot, Yorn wrote eight songs, which the duo recorded in 2006, though the collection wasn’t released until 2009. Break Up is a fortunate by-product of love gone wrong, and the pairing of the luscious Johansson and the brawny-voiced Yorn seems as natural as a ripe melon wrapped with salty prosciutto. Johansson was somewhat reticent on her solo debut, Anywhere I Lay My Head, but with Yorn she comes across as much more relaxed and confident. The lead single, “Realtor,” is a bubbly tune in which her voice is surprisingly strong and playful, and she doesn’t get lost in the atmospherics of songs like “Clean."  She’s delightfully sultry and coy on “I Don’t Know What to Do,” and her alluring, slightly husky coo throughout is enchanting. Yorn takes the lead here for the most part, and their pairing on tracks like the charming “Search Your Heart” is perfectly balanced. “I Am the Cosmos” is an odd but ultimately successful interpretation of the Chris Bell classic.

A much needed improvement for Scarlett

Scarlett's last album, Anywhere I Lay My Head was a collection of Tom Waits songs which I didn't enjoy... at all.
This new collaberation with Pete Yorn however, that's a different story.
Lovely, with lots of folking light pop tones, very easy to listen to and to put it simply, just plain enjoyable.
They work well together and the music really compliments Scarlett's voice.
Me like.

Not surprising.

Pete Yorn is an incredibly talented musician, both as a vocalist and a songwriter. "Relator" is one of the catchiest songs I've heard in a while, and the rest of the album is fresh and overall good stuff. Scarlett sounds really good too. This is a great duet album.

I was unimpressed with Scarlett's debut album, but this music is fantastic. She sounds a lot better!

*Search Your Heart, *Blackie's Dead, and of course, *Relator are my favorites. :)

New Jersey native Pete Yorn took a rather unique route to singer/songwriter acclaim, gaining his first big break by providing the score to a Farrelly Brothers film. Having graduated from Syracuse University several years prior, the 26-year-old pulled up stakes in 2000 and relocated to Los Angeles, CA, where he began writing music for film and television. Prospects increased when Yorn was recruited to score Me, Myself, & Irene, a Farrelly Brothers movie starring Jim Carrey. One of his own pop/rock...
