iTunes Review

It’s difficult to overstate the contributions of legendary New Orleans pianist, songwriter, arranger, and producer Allen Toussaint to American music. And he’s not finished, as recent albums such as the 2007 collaboration with Elvis Costello, The River in Reverse, attest. Clearly the man, who is 71 years old, is not living in the past. Toussaint and his cohorts’ vivacious interpretations of songs by such giants as Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt, Duke Ellington, and Thelonious Monk demonstrate exactly why these tunes are timeless. Partnering with an adventurous, A-list band (of course) that includes Don Byron (clarinet), Nicholas Payton (trumpet), Marc Ribot (acoustic guitar), David Piltch (upright bass), and Jay Bellerose (drums), with guest appearances by Joshua Redman (tenor sax) and Brad Mehldau (piano), the musicianship is simply superb throughout, with Toussaint confidently displaying his unique style of piano virtuosity — swinging, supple, and irrepressibly soulful. The Bright Mississippi offers further evidence of why Toussaint is rightfully considered a cultural treasure.

Dang. Hands down, this is just absolutely superb. Even if you're not a huge jazz fan, you have to appreciate the craft and sheer soulful talent here. An excellent addition to any musicphile's collection. This guy is 70 and still smokin' on the keys! WOW. Knocks me off my feet.

NOLA evocation

This is a wonderful soulful recording - evoking the earlier music of NOLA. Maestro Toussaint has surrounded himself with superb creative musicians and is looking to the future, by acknowledging the past. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Producer, songwriter, arranger, session pianist, solo artist -- Allen Toussaint wore all these hats over the course of his lengthy and prolific career, and his behind-the-scenes work alone would have been enough to make him a legend of New Orleans R&B. Thanks to his work with numerous other artists, Toussaint bore an enormous amount of responsibility for the sound of R&B in the Crescent City from the '60s on into the '70s. His productions kept with the times, moving from rollicking, earthy soul in...
